2013 World Junior Championship Round Robin Resume

Jonathan Drouin, Ty Rattie and Maclom Subban - Team Canada WJCA lot of games have been played since the start of this tournament on December 26th and a lot of goals were scored, a lot of hits, a lot of shots and a lot of great saves. This is just a small resume of the teams that are considered the top contenders for the gold medal that is Russia, Canada, USA and Sweden.

With the round robins completed we now know that Sweden and Canada are going straight to the semi final. Russia will play Slovakia and USA will play Republic Czech in the quarter finals on January 2nd.

Sweden (3-1-0-0)

The blue and yellow team had a pretty good round robin finishing first in their group. Although I believe that group A wasn’t a very competitive group, the Sweden are still a top contending team who had the chance to be in an “easy” group.

Their first game was against Czech Republic and they won 4 – 1, they dominated the game with a 41 to 26 shots.

Second game was a bit closer and the reason why they have 11 points instead of 12, they beat Switzerland 3 – 2 in overtime.

Third game was against Latvia…

Game #4 was against Finland, Finland had one of their worst tournament in a long time and needed a win to play in the medal round, Sweden played a great game and won 7 – 4 eliminating Finland from the medal round.

Canada (4-0-0-0)

The expectations are very high for team Canada this with all the talented players being able to play in this tournament because of the NHL lockout. With Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau and Schiefele we were pretty to get a good show this.

Finishing first in group B, Canada play automatically in the semi finals for a spot in the gold medal game on January 5th. This unbeaten streak is due to a great team effort, every player stepped up when they had to and one of the players who impressed me the most is Subban. Subban was so so during the selection camp and the first 2 games but when they played USA and Russia he made key saves and Canada would probably not have a ticket to the semi finals if it wasn’t for him making those saves.

First 2 games were pretty formal for team Canada 9 – 3 win against Germany and a 6 – 3 win over Slovakia, the team played good but still not great and Subban let a few questionable goals in.

Game #3! Now the competition starts and both teams knew it. It was a really fast paced game and very tight, the game finished 2 – 1 for Canada and I can say it was one of the best game of the round robin.

Game 4, the game that decided who gets the ticket directly to the semi finals and get 3 days off. Russia versus Canada was THE best game so far, the crowd was really into it and we got a really fast game with guys really grinding for the win. Canada wins 4 – 1 a big part of this win was the game misconduct that Russia had in the first period and Canada was able to score 2 goals during this 5 minute power play.

Canada will play the winner of the USA vs Republic Czech game on January 3rd.

A resume of USA and Russia will come shortly
